November 2013 unemployment rates from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and IDES have been posted to the WIRE’s Unemployment Page. These rates indicate a slight improvement in unemployment in Chicago and Illinois compared to the previous months, but negligible overall improvement since last year.
With continued economic struggles in Chicago and Illinois the recent end of unemployment insurance benefits for nearly 82,000 long-term unemployed Illinoisans is especially troubling. As Congress continues not to extend benefits, each week an additional 3,500 Illinois residents are losing unemployment benefits. For more information on the early effects of Congress’ inaction, visit the WIRE Publications Catalog for various reports and updates.
