Illinois is days away from going for a full year without a budget. We’re making history in a terrible way. We only have a few days to make sure we don’t enter a second year without a budget. Here are two important ways you can help stop the madness.five-call-challenge-copy

First: June 22-29, Five Call Challenge! We need our leaders to know that entering a second year without a budget is unacceptable! Invite your coworkers to a Five Call Challenge: at least 5 calls to the Governor, their Legislators, or Legislative Leaders before June 30, asking for a budget to be passed before the end of the fiscal year. Use this sample email to challenge your office. See who can make the most calls with this call sheet scoreboard!

Here are some scripts from the Responsible Budget Coalition to make the calls easier:

Share your progress on the calls on social media with the hashtag #GetItDoneIL!

Second: Thursday, June 30, Train Takeover and Shut Down the Thompson Center. On the last day of the fiscal year, help flood the Thompson Center with hundreds of others for a rally at 4:30. On the way to the Thompson Center, groups from organizations across the region will form teams of people to talk with commuters on the L Train about the budget. We need teams from as many organizations as possible! If you’re interested in being a team captain and can recruit members from your organization or others, please contact Eric for details (eric@cjc.net).

June 30 Sample Timeline:

  • 2-3pm Teams role-play and prepare for Train Takeover.
  • 3-4pm Teams ride trains from their neighborhoods into downtown, talking to commuters on the way.
  • 4-4:30pm Teams converge in
Thompson Center Plaza and debrief train activity.
  • 4:30 Rally begins!

More details and resources for the Train Takeover are coming!
